Notes on ordering tatami mats with tatami edges (tatami heri) in custom sizes

The Tatami mats we offer come in two types: one without tatami edges (tatami-mori) and the other with tatami edges (tatami-mori), which are often used in ordinary Japanese-style rooms.
You can choose according to your visual preference, but in terms of the strength of the edge of the tatami, the one with tatami edge has an advantage.

Notes on attaching tatami mat edges

What should we pay attention to when actually attaching tatami mat edges to tatami mats?

Tatami mat edges are fabrics that are attached to tatami mats to strengthen them and tighten gaps, and in some cases are used to play a role in the design.
They come in numerous colors, patterns, and materials, and are generally sewn 30 mm wide from the edge of the tatami’s surface.

The thickness of the tatami is limited to 30mm to cover the sides of the tatami with tatami edges

The width of the tatami edge itself is approximately 80mm, and the tatami surface side is sewn with the edge folded in.
If you want to put a tatami edge to cover the side of the tatami, it is possible to finish the tatami neatly as long as the thickness of the tatami is less than 30 mm.

If the thickness of the tatami is less than 30 mm, the seams are basically not visible from the sides.
The back of the tatami is covered with a non-woven fabric to prevent slipping.

When the thickness of tatami exceeds 30 mm

When tatami is made with a thickness exceeding 30 mm, the tatami edge cannot cover all sides and part of the core material will be visible.

As you can see in the photo, the seams and core material are visible on the sides of the tatami.
It is not so much a problem in use, but it does not look good.
If the sides of the tatami are hidden by wooden frames, etc., the seams and core material will not be visible, so there is no problem. However, if the tatami is used as a tatami to be placed on the floor, it is recommended that the thickness be 30 mm or less.

Does the thickness of the tatami make a difference?

Whether the thickness is 30 mm or 50 mm makes no difference in sleeping or sitting comfort.
The thicker the thickness, the better the heat insulation and sound insulation.
