One of the questions I am asked the most is:
“I’m planning on setting out my futon on the floor to sleep, but what kind of tatami do you recommend?” This is a common concern.
Recently there are tatami mats, apart from those made from natural grass, with many different functions.
People who have until now chosen natural grass tatami mats, as well as those who seek tatami that complements their modern interior design, now have a wealth to choose from.
If you are setting a futon out to sleep, it’s the same on removable tatami you put down, or tatami in a Japanese-style room.
I believe you should choose tatami mats whose characteristics match your expectations.

Characteristics of tatami made from natural grass.
Natural grass tatami mats are able to function as a type of humidity control for the room, and are also popular for giving off a pleasant smell of grass.
However, if you leave your futon out on them you may find them susceptible to mold.
If you are in the habit of folding your futon every day and clean regularly, you don’t need to worry about mold.
There is a greater propensity for mold in houses in the mountains or by the sea, where humidity is higher, and also in summer homes which are not often used.
Characteristics of the tatami made using TOKYO SERIES or ZEN (Japanese paper mats)
TOKYO SERIES or ZEN have nothing in them that could be classed as nutrients for mold or mites.
Owing to that, care is easy.
They also don’t discolor in sunlight, and there is an abundant range of colors so you can match your tatami to the atmosphere in your room.
