I’m considering getting a tatami mat for my toddler.Would the Tokyo or Zen be better?
The Tokyo Series employs an inorganic combination of different types of plastics as its core material.
This core material is then stretched and remade into the surface of the tatami mats.
As a result, the mats from the TOKYO Series have high endurance and retain their color even when laid under direct sunlight.
On the other hand, the ZEN Series employs traditional Japanese papers as its core material.
The papers are made into paper strings, which are then woven into the surface of the mats. In addition, the surface of the mats from the ZEN Series is specially processed so that the mats are water-proofed. Liquids falling on these mats will bounce off while retaining their droplet shapes.
Similar to the TOKYO Series, the mats from the ZEN Series also have a higher endurance compared to the traditional Igusa mats and could retain their color when laid under direct sunlight.
Functionally, there are no noticeable differences between these two series.
However, due to the difference in the core material, there is a difference in the appearance as well as the texture of the mats.
As a result, we recommend our customers to try out and choose the series that most fit their taste.
If you wish, we can send you a tatami cut sample.
