If you wish to dilute the smell of Igusa sooner rather than later, you could try airing the Tatami mats outdoors when it’s sunny, or ventilate the room where the Tatami mats are deployed as frequently as possible (but if you wish to do so, please take care to ensure that the Tatami mats don’t become wet/damp; Tatami mats made with Igusa need to be kept dry to avoid mold growth).

The smell of traditional Igusa (Rush grass) is something the Japanese people love, but some non-Japanese people do not like it.

Tatami mats, rugs, and other products made from Igusa always smell strongly of Igusa when purchased, but the smell does lose its intensity as you use them.
Moreover, if you live in a house that uses Igusa products, you will get used to the smell and it will stop bothering you, but guests and others who have not come across Igusa products before might take a getting used to.
The smell of Igusa will never completely go away, but it will gradually become less intense over time.
Traditional Japanese-style rooms are meant to smell of Igusa.
If a Japanese-style room doesn’t smell of Igusa, it is likely that a different material which is not Igusa is used.
For example, Tatami mats with surfaces made from resins (TOKYO SERIES), or Japanese paper (ZEN SERIES).
