We recently received an inquiry from an interior and construction company in Vietnam that supplies and installs a wide range of interior materials — raised floors, carpet tiles, vinyl flooring, and tatami.
The company had previously purchased Japanese tatami through a local distributor. This time, they contacted TOKYO TATAMI MAKER directly, looking to source tatami straight from Japan for future projects.
Inquiries like this are becoming increasingly common — and increasingly important to us.
Tatami is no longer limited to traditional Japanese rooms. Architects, contractors and interior designers around the world are now incorporating it into hotels, restaurants, residences, wellness spaces, tea rooms and contemporary interiors.

Direct Tatami Supply from Japan
TOKYO TATAMI MAKER manufactures and supplies tatami directly from Japan — not only to individual customers, but also to:
- Architects
- Interior designers
- Contractors
- Construction companies
- Hotels and hospitality businesses
- Furniture manufacturers
- Retailers and distributors
For professional projects, tatami is manufactured to the exact dimensions and specifications each space requires. Rather than choosing from standard ready-made sizes, customers can send us room dimensions, drawings, or floor plans, and we’ll propose a suitable tatami layout.
Custom Sizes for Architectural Projects
One of the biggest advantages of working with us directly is custom sizing. Tatami can be produced to fit a room, platform, bed, display area, or any other architectural feature — including special shapes such as notched corners or cut-outs.
Maximum size: approximately 1,000 mm wide × 2,000 mm long Thickness: adjustable to the project
This makes custom tatami especially valuable for projects where standard-sized mats simply won’t fit the space.

Three Main Tatami Materials
We offer several tatami surface types, so architects and designers can choose the material that best fits each project.
Natural Igusa Tatami The traditional material, offering the authentic texture, fragrance, and appearance of classic Japanese interiors. Best suited to Japanese-style rooms, tea rooms, ryokan-inspired interiors, hotels, high-end residential projects, and cultural spaces.
SEKISUI MIGUSA Tatami A high-performance synthetic surface made by SEKISUI in Japan, offering strong durability and color stability while retaining tatami’s traditional look and feel. Available in a wide range of colors, making it popular for hotels, restaurants, commercial interiors, offices, high-traffic spaces, and modern residences. Combined with a water-resistant core, it can also be made washable.
DAIKEN Washi Tatami A Japanese paper-based surface built for durability, fade resistance, and easy maintenance. Available in many colors for both traditional and contemporary spaces, and compatible with floor heating systems when paired with the right core material.
More Than Traditional Green Tatami
Many people outside Japan still picture tatami as a pale-green traditional floor covering. In reality, modern tatami comes in a wide range of colors — gray, beige, black, brown, blue, and more.
Even tatami of the same color can create a subtle checkerboard effect: by changing the weave direction between mats, light reflects differently off each surface. This makes tatami a strong fit for modern architecture and minimalist interiors.
Traditional Tatami with Decorative Edges
We also manufacture traditional tatami with decorative fabric edges, known as tatami-beri or heri, available in many colors and patterns. Edged tatami creates a more classic Japanese atmosphere and works especially well for tea rooms, Japanese restaurants, cultural facilities, and traditional interior projects.
How to Request a Quotation
Requesting a quote is simple. Please send us:
- Project location
- Room or installation dimensions
- Required quantity
- Preferred tatami material
- Required thickness
- Delivery destination
- Floor plan or drawing (if available)
Based on this, we’ll propose suitable tatami dimensions and prepare a quotation. Production begins once specifications and payment are confirmed — custom tatami typically takes about one week to manufacture, depending on quantity and specification, and ships directly from Japan.

Working with Overseas Contractors and Distributors
The Vietnam inquiry is a good example of how Japanese tatami is increasingly becoming part of international interior and architectural projects. The company already worked with Japanese building materials and had bought tatami through a distributor before — their next step was building a direct relationship with a Japanese supplier.
We welcome this kind of partnership. If you’re an architect, contractor, interior designer, construction company, or distributor looking for a reliable tatami supplier in Japan, please get in touch. Whether your project needs a few custom mats or a full commercial installation, we can work through the specifications together and manufacture to your requirements.
