Replacing old tatamis with new Ryuku tatamis by yourself

Replacing old tatamis with new Ryuku tatamis by yourself

A familiar Japanese-style room with six tatami mats

Their colors have faded into brown affected by the sun.

It could be that the customer has used these tatami mats for more than ten years.

Igusa is partly frayed.

Badly frayed, exposing the warp threads in tatami omote (covering).

You can’t let this be—uncomfortable.

Let’s start changing the tatami mats.

Pull up the old tatamis and dispose of them.

Clear away the dirt or the like that has settled over time.

Removing the old tatamis, you can see a flat concrete floor.

It could dawn on many of you that there is a floor set in concrete under tatamis.

Just replacing tatamis is no problem, but if you use tatamis in a new building, moisture can come out of the concrete.

In some cases, it is advisable to lay some newspaper or the like to dispose of moisture.

Well, let’s start laying out the set of tatamis delivered.

In here, there are tatamis.

Now this time, you have twelve pieces of tatami mats with 15mm thickness.

These tatamis were custom made to fit the room dimensions.

Please see the comments for the information on how to order custom-sized tatamis.

Tightly packed, we know it is not so easy to pull them out…

You should find the diagram attached at the side of the box illustrating how to lay out tatamis.

Having said that, it’s not what you won’t be able to follow.

Only “A” and “B” are described.

Let’s start laying out tatamis following the diagram.

Tatamis have an anti-slip gripper on their back.

On the back of tatamis, you will find the stickers on; one lettered A and the other B.

The arrows show the directions of igusa to lay.

Lay tatamis matching the directional arrows in the diagram with the directions shown on the stickers.

Lay them out one by one.

You really feel nervous worrying about whether you can do it successfully.

Tatami mats have some degree of flexibility, and can be pushed into it even if they are 1 or 2 mm larger. Keep it up.

Fabulous! You have finished it nice—a space you can say as a chic Japanese style!

Now you have produced a Ryukyu tatami room.

The room looks like using tatamis in two different colors, but actually they are of the same color.

Laying out tatamis of the same color in different directions alternately offers staggered reflections in sunlight that make it look like you have two different tone tatamis laid out—a beautiful Ichimatsu pattern (checkered ).

How exciting it can be when you have succeeded in laying out tatamis beautifully to fit to your room dimensions…

Let the magic of tatami begin with you. Give it a try! Give us your feedback.
