Can I Use Tatami Mats in Nordic Countries? (Customer from Norway)

Hello!
This is Awaji from TOKYO TATAMI MAKER.

Today, we’d like to answer a great question we received from a customer in Norway:
“Is it okay to use tatami in a cold and dry climate like in Northern Europe?”

If you live outside Japan or are considering sleeping directly on a tatami mat with a shikibuton (Japanese futon) on top, this article is for you.

■ Customer Inquiry (Summary)

I live in Norway and I want to buy a tatami mat to place on the floor for sleeping, using a shikibuton on top.
But since the climate here is cold and dry, I’m not sure which kind of tatami is the best choice.
Could you give me some guidance? Also, is it possible to order samples?

■ Can You Use Tatami in Cold, Dry Climates?

In Japan, summers are hot and humid, so natural igusa (rush grass) tatami mats sometimes develop mold if not aired out or cleaned regularly.

However, in Nordic countries like Norway, where the air is dry and temperatures are cooler, you’re much less likely to have issues with mold or dust mites.

That said, to maximize longevity and comfort, we still recommend:

  • Folding up your shikibuton every morning
  • Airing out the room regularly

These simple habits can help keep your tatami in excellent condition for years.

■ Recommended Tatami Types

If you’re planning to sleep directly on tatami, here are two main types to consider:

✅ Synthetic Tatami (TOKYO Series / ZEN Series)

  • Highly durable and resistant to wear
  • No nutrients for mold or dust mites
  • Color does not fade over time
  • Easy to clean and maintain
  • Does not have the scent of natural rush grass

✔ Ideal if you prioritize durability and low maintenance.

✔ Ideal if you value a traditional Japanese experience and natural materials.
