What is the difference of durability and so on between organic (or natural) rush and new material (resin, Japanese paper)?

I have a three-year-old son, and we are planning to use it for western style room which is next to living room and can get sunshine, is a tatami made of Japanese paper possible to keep longer? Also, please kindly advise if it is easy to lose texture and scent of tatami.
